The Unexpected Perks of Greenhouse Growing

AUTHOR
Shannon Walker

When I first started greenhouse gardening, I thought the main benefit would be extending the growing season, starting seedlings, and overwintering my beloved summer plants.  While all of that is true, I quickly discovered that having a greenhouse offers so many unexpected perks I hadn’t anticipated—perks that have made it one of my favorite spaces ever. Here’s a glimpse into some of the joys I’ve experienced firsthand.

1. Clean Harvests - No More Dirty Veggies

I’ll never forget the first time I picked lettuce in my greenhouse—it was flawless, not a speck of dirt in sight. Growing up, I remember washing and washing greens and still not being able to get all the “grit” off.

In fact, for Christmas dinner, my son had requested a combination of mustard and collard greens. I had not yet planted any (lesson learned) so I ordered from our grocery store. I diligently washed and washed and washed. After cooking them – they had to be tossed after the first bit due to still being dirty. I will never make that mistake again.

My greenhouse harvests are clean and ready for the kitchen with barely any rinsing needed. It’s a small detail, but one that saves me time and makes cooking straight from the garden feel even more rewarding — with less disappointment and waste.

2. Fewer Pests to Battle

I used to wage war against deer, rodents, and squirrels every growing season. One year, I lost half my cucumbers to an army of pests overnight—it was heartbreaking. With my greenhouse, those days are behind me. The peace of mind it gives me is priceless.

3. No Weeds, No Problem

I have to admit, weeding is one of my least favorite chores in the garden. Kneeling in the dirt, pulling weeds on a hot summer day? No thanks. In the greenhouse, weeding is nonexistent. It’s one less thing on my to-do list – which, to me, is a HUGE one. This means more time to enjoy the actual process of gardening itself.

4. Ergonomic Gardening - Waist Level Growing

Speaking of raised garden tables, they’ve been a game-changer for me. No more bending and straining—everything is right there at waist level. I feel like a professional gardener as I plant, water, and harvest without ever crouching down. My back has never been happier!

I do have some things at floor level, but they are pretty self-sufficient and I just water with my hose or watering can.

5. Up Close and Personal With Your Plants

Greenhouse gardening has made me more observant. I’ve found myself marveling at tiny things I used to overlook—like how the leaves of a tomato plant subtly curl when they’re thirsty or how basil flowers smell faintly different than the leaves. Being in the greenhouse daily allows me to develop a deeper connection with my plants, and it’s a connection that brings me so much joy.

6. Controlled Climate, Happier Plants

There’s something magical about stepping into a warm greenhouse on a chilly morning and seeing how happy the plants look. One spring, an unexpected late frost hit overnight, but my greenhouse stayed cozy and safe. It made my heart happy as I walked in and saw everything thriving. It felt like a victory!

That’s another reason I am slow to transfer things out of my greenhouse in the spring – I want all chances of anything unexpected to be behind me.

7. Extend the Growing Season

Every fall, when the outdoor garden starts to fade, my greenhouse comes alive. Last year, I enjoyed fresh tomatoes and peppers well into November. Some years, I've grown them all winter. There’s something incredibly satisfying about walking past frost-covered grass to pick herbs and veggies as if it were still summer.

8. Year-Round Gardening Joy

Winter used to feel like a long, bleak pause in my gardening life. Now, my greenhouse has become a winter sanctuary. I love starting seedlings in January—it energizes me for the growing season ahead. Many days I just go inside to sit, breathe in the earthy air, and soak up the greenery when everything outside is bare.

9. Improved Harvests and Yields

Since starting with a greenhouse, I’ve noticed my plants are healthier and more productive. The consistency of the environment—no harsh winds, no unexpected downpours—helps them thrive. My tomatoes have never tasted sweeter, and my peppers seem to grow faster and more prolific every year.

10. Creative Freedom

Next up: I want to try growing pineapples in my greenhouse just for fun. I may not live in the tropics, but my greenhouse gives me the freedom to push boundaries and see what’s possible.
The day I decided to encourage my geraniums to produce winter blooms instead of allowing them to go dormant, changed my gardening days forever.

11. An Escape to Your Private Oasis

This is probably my favorite perk of all. My greenhouse isn’t just a place to grow plants—it’s a place to grow peace. Whenever I need a moment to myself, I step inside, surrounded by greenery and the gentle hum of life. It’s become my sanctuary — a little world of its own where I can recharge and refocus. It truly works!
